英語が読めない人は「で、結局の話、質はどうなのよ？」と訊かれるかもしれません。正直な話、これらの原文はさほど難しいものではありませんが、訳文には誤訳やスタイル的な問題が多々見受けられました。プロの翻訳者のレベルではありませんし、下手をすれば高校生レベルの英語力を持った方が訳したのではないか（英語原文Aとか）、と首をかしげてしまうものもあります。大切なメッセージをしっかり伝えたい場合に使えるものではありません（そもそもお金を払ってまで「大切ではない」メッセージを訳してもらうかという問題もありますが）。スピードアップとコストダウンの代償があまりにも大きいことは明確です。
ただ誤解して欲しくないのは、私はソーシャル翻訳という試みについては反対どころか、むしろ応援しているということです。例えば日本アニメがアメリカで放送されるまでにはどうしてもタイムラグが生じてしまうのですが、一部ファンは映像を取り寄せて、ファン同士で翻訳サイトを立ち上げてワイワイ議論しながら自分たちの英語字幕を作成するということが実際に起こっています。TwitterやFacebookについても、サイトを利用する（サービスが大好きな）ユーザが翻訳しているのですが、SNSという性質上、実はそれがもっとも適したローカリゼーションの形なのかなとも考えたりします。
今後の課題はやはり質をどう上げていくか。そして一定の質を維持するか。方法はあるのかもしれませんが、私の想像力はまだ追いついていません。
